Apache History
Back in 1995 the most popular server software on the web was the public domain HTTP daemon that was developed by Rob McCool, NCSA, University of Illinois. Since that time a group of web masters, who at first were communicating via email, gathered together to coordinate the extensions they developed in the form of patches. By the end of February 1994 there already were eight contributors who formed the foundation of the original Apache Group. Later some programmers from NCSA joined the Apache Group.
The first official release of Apache was in April 1995. During May-June 1995 the Apache group focused on implementing new features and supporting the rapidly growing Apache users' community. All the efforts resulted in 0.7.x version.
Since that time there was Apache 0.8.8 version released in August ;1995 and on December 1, 1995 there was Apache1.0.
In 1999 the Apache group was transformed into Apache Software Foundation to provide support for the Apache HTTP server in different areas such as organizing, finance and other.
