Domain Name
is the unique name that identifies an Internet site. Domain Names always have 2 or more parts, separated by dots.
The Domain name is given to each web site in the Internet as it makes something like its network address. The server that contains the data concerning the web site has its own unique number, called an IP address that consists of numbers only. It's not difficult for computer to remember numbers but it is for people. So to make surfing throughout the Internet easier and more comfortable the Domain Name System (DNS) was invented. Domain names contain letters and words, which are much easier for people to remember.
The domain names consist of three parts which are the Top Level Domain, Root, and Second Level Domain.
Second Level domain and the Top Level Domain are separated from each other with the Root (the "dot").
Top level domain is the part of your domain name, which is situated on the left from the Root. It is also called Domain Extension. There are different types of them and the most common are .com, .net and .org.
Second level domain is the reliable part of your domain name. It is situated on the right from the root and is in complete control of the registrant. There are also further domain levels possible in this domain names.
Domain names are registered by so-called Registrars. Those are officially accredited by ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) organizations that provide services of domain names registration and have their lists of the ones that are not available. So you can check if the one you created is used by anyone else and whether you should get another one.
How to Choose a Domain Name?
Your domain name should be as short as possible because in such case it is much easier to remember and to spell it. You should also try to avoid numbers and dashes in your domain name, choose the name that includes some dictionary words as all these factors also make your domain name easier to remember and increase the possibility of user to come back again.
You cannot change your domain name after you've registered it though you can sell it. There are specialized domain name auction web sites. There you can either sell your domain name to get rid of it or sell domain names for profit. Domain name could be transferred as you, for example, change your web hosting provider.
If you have no web site yet but have already contrived its domain name, you can register it by means of "parking" it. It means you reserve your domain name until you launch your web site and keep it so nobody else could take your domain name.
