Homepage
A home page is the first page of a web site. There is one on all the web sites of the world and it is the page that is opened when one writes a domain web address in an appropriate place of the browser without indicating a particular page (for example www.thesite.com). It may be also the "default" page. That means that the page is designated to be the main point of entry of a web site when a browser first connects to the Internet.
The home page of a site usually welcomes you and introduces the purpose of the site or the organization that sponsors it. It also provides links to the lower-level pages of the site so that you can find all the needed information.
When creating Web pages, the "home" page has the filename "index.html," which is the default name. The "index" page automatically opens up as the "home" page. Creating a web page you should bother to provide it an easy download and a nice design or you may loose many potential customers.
The term "home page" may also be understood as a personal page of an individual user. If there is more than one page, it becomes a personal website, rather than a personal homepage.
Interesting to know:
- In some countries, such as Germany, Korea, and Japan, the term "homepage" commonly refers to a complete website (of a company or other organization) rather than to a single web page.
- Some servers support multiple home pages.
